Background

  • Phillip Zorab was a chest physician in London with an interest in scoliosis
  • These symposia have taken place on occasional basis over the last 30 years to study aspects of scoliosis in depth
  • They have been supported by clinicians and scientists from all over the world
  • Much new work has been done in the field of idiopathic scoliosis aetiology. If this work leads to new treatments, how are we to test these in clinical trials?
  • Christ Church was the venue for the 10th meeting in 1998.
  • This college provides the perfect environment for academic discussion in the heart of the University of Oxford

Objectives

  • To review knowledge of aetiology of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis
  • To identify possible clinical applications of new knowledge of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis
  • To develop methodology for the assessment of new treatments in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

Methodology

Dahlem style conference

  • Initial plenary session + keynote speakers
  • 4 Group sessions on the main areas of aetiology research
  • Clinical session to examine methodology of application of new knowledge
  • Final plenary sessions + keynote speakers
