The Charles Manning Award
The Charles Manning Award is intended to provide small grants to healthcare professionals involved in the area of spinal deformity, as a contribution towards travel costs incurred when visiting institutions relevant to the area. Contributions towards the cost of attending conferences or meetings directly related to their field of expertise will also be considered.
The Award is primarily intended for applicants of a pre-Consultant level and allied health professionals, however in exceptional circumstances an Award may be made to an individual who is outside these criteria. The BSRF particularly welcomes applications from junior Doctors.
Background to the Award
Mr CWSF Manning was an outstanding Orthopaedic Surgeon who developed the speciality of scoliosis surgery at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, during the 1960s and early 1970s.
He collaborated with Philip Zorab at the Brompton Hospital to develop respiratory research in Scoliosis and thereby, developed an international reputation in the field of children's spinal deformities. Mr Manning was also concerned with promoting communication of research findings and improved methods of treatment between professionals, a key priority for the BSRF, and it is intended that The Charles Manning Award will help to ensure that this sharing of information is supported and encouraged.
